Wines named after Traditional Countries?

A distinctive feature of Munda Wines is our deliberate and proud decision to name all our wines for the Traditional Countries where they are produced. There are a number of reasons for this approach, which is - at its heart - an act of respect, recognition, and truth-telling.

Fundamentally, every decision we make starts with respect for Country. This means our approach goes far beyond branding, to embody our belief that land, story, and culture are inseparable.

1. To Honour Country and Custodianship

Each wine begins with munda - meaning land in Wirangu and Kokatha language. By naming every wine after the Traditional Country where the vineyard sits, we acknowledge the First Peoples as the enduring custodians and owners of that land, and recognise that every bottle of our wine has a story older and deeper than viticulture alone.

For us, this naming isn't symbolic. It's about ensuring that Aboriginal presence and knowledge are woven into the very fabric of how Australian wine is spoken about and shared. Just as soil and sunlight shape the fruit, the stories and histories of each Country shape our understanding of place.

When someone pours a glass of our Wadandi Chardonnay or Kaurna Country Syrah, they're engaging with a specific landscape - its language, its geology, and its people. Each label becomes a small act of acknowledgement and connection, carrying forward a truth that has existed for tens of thousands of years: that land, story, and identity are inseparable.

By using Traditional language on our labels, we also help keep language alive, celebrating the voices that have described these lands for thousands of years.

2. To Tell the Story of Place

Wine is shaped by its environment - soil, wind, water, and time - just as Aboriginal Country is defined by story, songline, and spirit. Naming wines for Country connects these two systems of understanding land. It invites our customers and clients to experience terroir not only as geology and climate, but as living culture and memory.

The traditional French concept of terroir speaks of a sense of place informed by rainfall, soil type and geology. The Aboriginal concept of Country goes deeper - it includes people, language, spirit, plants, and animals. It's a holistic, living understanding of land as something we belong to, not something we own.

By bringing these worlds together, we aspire to create a richer vocabulary for talking about wine in the Australian context. When we describe a Chardonnay from Walgalu Country, we're not just talking about cool mountain air or mineral soils; we're acknowledging the endless generations of care and custodianship of Walgalu people in that same landscape, and the continuing story that flows through it.

3. To Invite Connection and Conversation

Each of our wine labels is an invitation - to learn, to listen, and to connect. It opens a conversation about how we see and value the landscapes that sustain us, and the knowledge held within them. The wines become a bridge between cultures, encouraging curiosity and respect through the simple, shared act of sharing a glass.

Wine has always brought people together - over meals, in celebration, or in quiet reflection. At Munda Wines, we see it as an opportunity to start meaningful conversations about land, culture, and care. When someone asks, "Where is Wadandi Country?" or "What does Wurundjeri mean?", that question becomes a spark for learning.

Through that curiosity, understanding begins to grow. The more we talk about Country, the more we reconnect with it - not as an abstract map, but as a living, breathing presence. That's the heart of what Munda Wines seeks to share: not just fine wine, but a way of seeing and appreciating the stories written in the land itself.

4. To Lead Through Aboriginal Ownership and Voice

As a 100% Aboriginal-owned premium wine company, Munda Wines seeks to model a new approach to storytelling and provenance in the Australian wine industry - one that is inclusive, authentic, and led by Aboriginal voices. Naming each wine after its Traditional Country embodies that leadership and grounds the brand's purpose in both cultural and environmental truth.

Aboriginal ownership in the premium wine sector is rare - and powerful. It allows us to redefine what provenance means in this landscape, ensuring that cultural integrity sits alongside craftsmanship. By centring Aboriginal language, philosophy, and respect for Country, Munda Wines seeks to demonstrate what leadership looks like when guided by values rather than convention.

This approach extends beyond the bottle. It's reflected in how we collaborate with winemakers, distributors, and communities - through shared respect, transparent partnerships, and a commitment to long-term impact. Naming each wine after Traditional Country is our way of saying: this land has always held story, and we are privileged to share it in this form.

It is our sincere hope that this approach enourages other wine producers to honour the Traditional Custodians of the lands they work on, ensuring the stories of Country are recognised, celebrated, and shared across the industry.

A Story That Begins with Land

At its heart, Munda Wines is about more than terroir. It's about truth - the truth that every place holds story, and that by acknowledging those stories, we create something richer, more connected, and more enduring. And beyond truth, there's respect, because Respecting Country also means caring for it, through sustainable winemaking practices that honour the balance between people, land, and environment.

Each bottle is a chapter in that story, and an invitation to experience the ancient character of Country through the craftsmanship of those who care for it today. When you share a bottle of Munda, you're not just enjoying a wine. You're part of a continuing story - one that begins with land, and leads back to it.
