Munda Wines Takes Japan - A Big Week on the World Stage

What a week for Munda Wines - and what a moment for First Nations businesses on the global stage.

Osaka Expo Showcase, August 2025

We've just returned from an extraordinary trade mission to Japan, where we proudly represented South Australia and Aboriginal-owned businesses at a series of showcase events across Tokyo and Osaka. From the Australian Embassy to the Osaka World Expo, the energy, generosity and enthusiasm from our Japanese hosts was heartwarming and sincere - everyone we met had a genuine desire to learn more about Aboriginal culture, language and storytelling.

The mission brought together 12 First Nations-owned businesses, each carrying their own stories, innovations and cultural strength, and was aligned with Te Aratini Indigenous Peoples Week at the Osaka Expo: a global celebration of Indigenous cultures, creativity and leadership .

Showcasing Munda Wines in Tokyo

Our first stop was the Australian Embassy in Tokyo, where we joined a lineup of Aboriginal-owned brands for a special showcase, introducing our products and companies to a VIP room of Japanese businesses, importers, sommeliers, restaurateurs, and Government representatives. It was an immense privilege to pour our wines here, share some stories and bring a little bit of #themundaeffect to Tokyo.

First Nations Showcase, Tokyo

A special shoutout must go to Daniel Motlop from Seven Seasons, who brought signature style and spark to the experience (and yes, we absolutely claimed a spot in the cool kids' corner).

Osaka Expo 2025 - Sharing Country with the World

From Tokyo, we travelled to Osaka for Expo 2025, where Australia's striking Pavilion - divided into Land, Sky and Sea - welcomed more than a million visitors in its first months. Naturally, we found ourselves right at home in the Land section, pouring wines shaped by the very Countries we honour on every label.

We again had the opportunity to showcase Munda Wines to an incredible mix of hotel groups, sommeliers, wine writers (including the delightful Yoko & Yoko), and industry leaders from across Japan, all hosted by Austrade and the SA Government. Sharing the story of Munda Wines - of Country, culture, and deep-time connection - resonated in ways that will stay with us for a long time.

And, as if the week needed any more magic, even the fireworks over the Expo joined in on the celebration.

More Than a Trade Mission

For us, this wasn't just about export. It was about connection - to place, to people, to Country, and to the global movement of Indigenous excellence. As Mel Harris from Austrade put beautifully, "This mission isn't just about commerce - it's about cultural connection and partnership." We couldn't agree more.

We're deeply grateful to Austrade, the South Australian Government, and every business that stood beside us - each one bringing their own stories, brilliance and power.

There's so much more to come for Munda Wines, and we're proud to be sharing Country with the world, one glass at a time.
